October 2024 – We are thrilled to share the findings from GreenKayak’s first-ever impact research, revealing the significant effects our initiatives have on participants’ awareness and behavior towards ocean pollution. Since 2017, 84,653 volunteers have helped remove 134 tons of waste from local waterways, but the real impact goes beyond these numbers.
This summer, we surveyed over 2,200 participants, and the results show how GreenKayak cleanups are making a difference. 61.2% of respondents reported a moderate to significant increase in their awareness of ocean pollution after their kayak experience. Firsthand encounters with waste left a deep impression, transforming perceptions and sparking dialogue about environmental responsibility.
In terms of behavior change, nearly 40% of participants reported adopting more sustainable habits after their cleanup, from reducing plastic use to engaging in other environmental activities. While many participants were already eco-conscious, GreenKayak provides a unique platform for them to take action and contribute to cleaner waterways.
Perhaps most inspiring is that 98.2% of volunteers felt more committed or unchanged in their environmental engagement after participating, with 100% agreeing that GreenKayak is a valuable initiative for any city.
You can find the full details of our impact research in the attached report. As we look to expand, this research confirms that GreenKayak has the potential to inspire global environmental stewardship, empowering people to make a difference locally and beyond.
